Automated Toolpath Generation

Our Project
We have developed an automated toolpath generation model for use with Autodesk Fusion. It takes advantage of the template feature, storing collections of toolpath strategies with saved settings. Using the programming interface, we have devleoped an add-in for maximum ease of use.
-
The Benefit
Our model allows for safe, rapid programming of CNC machines by all users. Cut down on programming time, required programming knowledge, and detrimental errors with this method. This model lays out a single framework that gets applied to every part, allowing machine operators to expect the same behavior across all parts.
-
The Limitations
Our model does not automatically select machining orientation or create fixturing. The machining orientation must be selected by the user (more in instructions) and the fixturing must be decided by the operator. The model assumes a fixture holding the part 0.2 inches from the bottom of the part. Additonally, the model uses a pre-defined basic tool library. This tool library (.tools) is available in the file downloads. This basic library can struggle with more complicated geometry that requires advanced tooling. Additonally, toolpaths are generated for a traditional 3 axis mill.

What Is Provided
We provide all the neccessary items to get this automation model started in your workflow. Our downloads link sends you to a GitHub repository containing all the files. Instructions are provided for installation and use on the instructions page. Additionally, we provide results from our testing and case studies on its own dedicated page for viewing.
