Title: IDEAL (InDustrial Engineers Are Leaders) Learning Community – Peer Mentor
Department: Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineering
Job Conditions: Academic Year 2022-2023
Compensation: 5-10 hours per week, $15.00/hour
Job Summary
The IDEAL Learning Community is designed to help students who are majoring in industrial engineering transition to the university environment. Peer mentors are expected to be leaders in building a sustainable learning community that enhances student engagement. Additional goals of the IDEAL Peer Mentor are to promote academic excellence and encourage the development of student relationships with other students, staff and faculty.
Mentoring Opportunities:
- Serve as an academic consultant for students in the Industrial Engineering Program (Leadership)
- Contact learning community mentees prior to their arrival at ISU and throughout the academic year (Leadership, Communication)
- Meet one-on-one with mentees throughout the academic year to develop positive rapport (Communication)
- Assist in developing graduation plans for new students and serve as a resource (Leadership, Learning & Application)
- Lead study nights and organize special study sessions before exams (Collaboration & Teamwork, Learning & Application)
- Plan and facilitate multiple social activities each semester to meet the variety of interests and needs of our students (Professionalism, Communication, Collaboration & Teamwork, Intercultural Perspectives)
- Post opportunities and activities in Canvas (Technology)
Teaching Assistance:
- Attend ENGR 101 in the Fall semester and IE 101 for at least one semester (Leadership, Professionalism)
- Capture class attendance for ENGR 101 & IE 101 (Technology)
- Plan and present lesson plans for ENGR 101 (Leadership, Professionalism, Technology, Application & Learning)
- Develop and facilitate group activities to engage mentees in the classroom (Leadership, Collaboration & Teamwork)
- Evaluate, provide feedback for, and submit grades for student assignments in Canvas (Critical Thinking & Problem Solving, Technology)
Other Responsibilities
- Attend University Learning Community training events, including mandatory training in August and one supplemental training opportunity per semester (Learning & Application)
- Attend weekly meetings with the learning community coordinators (Learning & Application, Collaboration & Teamwork)
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Industrial Engineering major
- Cumulative GPA of at least 2.50
- Sophomore, junior, senior standing for academic year 2022-2023
- Available (on campus) for both fall and spring semesters
- Able to work independently, collaboratively, and show strong interpersonal skills
This position allows students to develop and support a successful community. This is a leadership position. There are two IDEAL Learning Communities in the IMSE Department, IDEAL Freshman and IDEAL Transitions.
